Wisconsin America's Dairyland

The State of Wisconsin earned its reputation as America's Dairyland because of the large variety of great cheeses that it produces. The dairy industry generates annually over $40 billion to the state's economy. This is more than the combined value of citrus to Florida, potatoes to Idaho, apples to Washington and raisins to the State of California all together.

While consolidation is an ongoing process about one fifth of the dairy farms in the USA are still situated in the Dairy State. The 1.3 million dairy cows produce over 30 billion pounds of milk of which 90% is made into cheese. It makes Wisconsin the number one cheese state in the US. Historically it was all about the production of large 40 pound blocks of commodity cheese like cheddar but today also 47% of all specialty cheeses in the U.S. come from Wisconsin.

To help develop new technologies and product the dairy industry can count on the support of organizations with a strong history and reputation like the Center of Dairy Research (CDR) and the University of Wisconsin System.

Living conditions in the countryside are favorable with good education, health care and churches in many places. Every year in the first week of October the city of Madison hosts the World Dairy Expo the largest dairy exhibition in the world. From Tuesday till Saturday the event is attended by some 70,000 visitors of which more than 3,000 international visitors.
